Field Copy Hero allows you to automatically copy or move information from one custom field in your email marketing platform or CRM into another.

One of our main uses for Field Copy Hero is preserving the original source of a subscriber.

For example, somebody may originally join your list from Meta Ads before interacting with lots of different campaigns later. Field Copy Hero can copy that original information into a dedicated field and prevent it from being overwritten in the future.

Setting Up Your Field Copy Hero:

  1. Create a new Field Copy Hero, choose your integration and give your Hero a clear name and optional label.

  2. Choose your Mode:
    1. Copy - The information in the Source Field is copied into the Destination Field. The Source Field is left unchanged. (Think of this as Copy + Paste)

    2. Move - The information is moved from the Source Field into the Destination Field and removed from the original Source Field. (Think of this as Cut + Paste)
  1. Select your Source Field.

  2. Select your Destination Field. The arrow inside Field Copy Hero shows the direction the data will travel.

NOTE: Your custom fields must be created inside your email marketing platform or CRM first. If you've recently created new fields and can't see them inside AutomateHero, use the Sync/Refresh button on the right-hand-side to update the tags and fields from your email platform.

  1. Choose your Update Mode. There are three options:
    1. Do Not Overwrite - If the Destination Field already contains information, Field Copy Hero leaves it unchanged. This is ideal for keeping something such as a subscriber's Original Source.

    2. Overwrite - The existing Destination Field value will be replaced with the latest value from the Source Field. Use this when you always want to store the latest information.

    3. Merge To End - The new information is added to the end of the existing Destination Field value. This can be useful for platforms or campaigns where you're building up a string of information inside one field.

  1. If you need to copy or move additional fields, click Add Another Field Action. For example, when tracking attribution you might store:
  • Source.
  • Medium.
  • Campaign.
  • Content.
  • Term.

You could then copy each of these into corresponding Original fields.

  1. Depending on your integration, you may also have the option to assign or remove tags after the Field Copy Hero runs.

  2. Click Save & Get Code.

Triggering Your Field Copy Hero:

Field Copy Hero can normally be triggered in three different ways.

  1. Form Post Link -  Use this when you want the Field Copy Hero to run as somebody passes through an opt-in form or Thank You Page.

  2. Click Link - Use this when you want the Hero to run after somebody clicks a link in an email.

  3. HTTP Post / Webhook - For many Field Copy Hero setups, this is our preferred option. Copy the HTTP Post/Webhook URL and add it as a step inside your email automation. When the subscriber reaches that step, Field Copy Hero can update their fields automatically in the background, without requiring them to click anything.

Tracking Original Source Data

One of our main internal uses for Field Copy Hero is combining it with UTM tracking so that we can preserve fields such as:

• Original Source.
• Original Medium.
• Original Campaign.
• Original Content.
• Original Term.

We then use Do Not Overwrite so that those original attribution values remain locked in place even if the subscriber interacts with other campaigns later.

UTM setup itself is outside the scope of this guide, but Field Copy Hero can be used with any compatible custom-field data, not just attribution information.
